In this shot I asked Audrey to give me a serious look and I got exactly the shot I was looking for. I was pretty happy with the original and when I processed it recently in Color Efex for Lightroom I liked it even more. However, my mentor who I trust a lot felt that the expression on her face was too mean looking so it ruined the shot of an admittedly pretty woman. Naturally, I’ve received lots of complements on this shot because Audrey is fairly easy on the eyes, but I want to know what my readers think. The question here is “does Audrey’s expression ruin this shot”?
It should be noted that I’m not looking for feedback on the rest of the shot as everything else is exactly as I wanted it (including the intentionally bright shirt and white out background behind her head). For those very troubled about intentional highlight clipping, a more properly exposed version is available here.
This photo was shot using a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM lens at 200mm paired with a Canon Rebel XTi set to f/5.6 and 1/160 sec at ISO 100.

Ruin? Ruin is such a strong word. It might ruin the shot if it was an endoresment for anti-depression medication. Her expression certainly lends a strong feeling to the shot. If that is good or bad is up for interpretation.
Ruin? hell no! I think it adds intrigue to the photo. You're wondering what's going on around behind the scenes of what the camera is looking at. There are so many shots of people smiling, this adds a little bit of mystery. I like the look.
i agree that "ruin" is too a strong word. it depends on what u want to accomplish with the image. i believe that u r the sole judge of your images unless u r doing the work for a customer.
consider discussing this further with your mentor.
